Advances in Biomass-Based Materials and Their Applications

Journal: Materiale Plastice Article Types: Research & Review Papers ISSN: 2668-8220

Aims and Scope

Traditional packaging materials suffer from several limitations, including poor mechanical properties, limited biocompatibility, low biodegradability, and weak antibacterial performance, which restrict their suitability for modern packaging applications. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop ideal packaging materials derived from natural biomass that offer multifunctional advantages such as green, non-toxic, renewability, biodegradability, antibacterial properties, and underpinning all these properties.

Natural biomass materials, particularly polysaccharides and gelatin, are among the most abundant and cost-effective biopolymers. They exhibit desirable characteristics such as excellent film-forming ability, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, making them promising candidates for sustainable packaging solutions.

This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advances in biomass-based materials, including their technologies, scientific principles, and functionalization strategies, as well as their potential applications in the packaging field. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, antibacterial materials, edible packaging, and intelligent packaging systems. The collection will cover the preparation, characterization, performance evaluation, and practical applications of biomass-based packaging materials.

Submissions on related topics that align with the overall theme of this Special Issue are also highly encouraged. We welcome original research articles, review and mini-review papers, as well as case studies.
